How this week demonstrated the degree to which Brexit has damaged the “special relationship” with the US The coverage of Joe Biden’s visit to the UK this week has been done in largely partisan strokes by the British media, albeit within the boundaries of the utterly bizarre partisanship of the 2020s. It used to be that the right in the UK was instinctively pro-American, whether there was a Democrat or a Republican in the White House. Now, they talk about Biden as if he’s Kim Jong Un; not just an undesirable leader of another country but someone who threatens the stability of the western world.
I don’t think it’s childish to frame Brexiters in the way you do or even just for fun. There’s something uniquely personal about Brexit and in my experience it gets to the heart of them as people.
I often think of the division between Brexiters and Remainers in personal terms like the archetypal sterile marriage. One side delusional with their paltry offerings, always trying to confirm everything’s ok but quick to anger because they know it isn’t and never will be, while the other is just secretly horrified and can’t wait for it all to be over.
Nice characterisation. It’s like there’s some sort of psychosis. For instance my dear father-in-law calls Biden a “little man” in a contemptuous tone. As if Biden hadn’t legislated the greatest piece of infrastructure investment in the world, unprecedentedly (?) won mid-term elections and largely secured European defence against Russia’s invasion.. and Rishi Sunak had!
That’s funny. My dad had it in for Juncker as if he was the Maastricht Treaty incarnate, always doing a certain kind of snort. But I can easily imagine him treating Farage with exactly the same derision if had been on the EU side. Instead he paid good money wasting my inheritance to go listen to his drivel.
I don't want to go too far down the gender rabbit hole but I do think Brexiter men have well and truly blown the lid off the idea that only women are the ‘bitchy’ ones.
I don't think this Brexit related, it's just tribal politics. The Tory right (which is almost all the Tory party these days) agree with and repeat what the US Republicans say about Biden by default, no matter how nutty it is. Biden is at best right of centre but that's bordering on communist for Tories and Republicans alike.
