Chapter 8: What are the best pro-rejoin arguments?
Remarkably, there aren’t a lot of fully formed arguments out there for why the United Kingdom should rejoin the European Union. Most of the Remainer bullet points that are put out on social media or elsewhere these days revolve around why Brexit is bad - which is obviously related, but not in fact the same thing.
This is a carry on from the 2016 Remain campaign which was built around scaremongering to try and keep us in the EU, with a notable lack of messaging around why remaining would be a positive thing in and of itself. What I’m going to attempt to do in this chapter is identify what I believe to be the strongest rejoin arguments and elaborate upon them. One thing to note: events and shifting political sands could change some of these and perhaps even relegate a few of them altogether, yet even if this turns out to be the case, setting out the best arguments as they stand, right now, will help to shape the thinking of the future.
I’ve come up with what I think are the eight strongest arguments for rejoin, were a referendum to be held this year. Think of this as the future rejoin campaign’s pledge card, with extra explanation where needed:
