You might look at that headline and think it’s ridiculous. You might even get angry at it, thinking I’ve resorted to some weird form of clickbait. Which to some extent, I have - I picked the title above with a view to gaming the YouTube algorithm, as a sort of experiment (in relation to the post at the bottom of this article). But having set myself this headline as a sort of challenge, I intend to see it out and answer the quandary it establishes.
I love the Beatles. If I was being honest and not trying to make myself sound overly edgy, I might even say they were my favourite band of all time. I mean, seriously, who is really better than the Beatles? Except, then they broke up and the members made their own material. Some of it is great - John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band, Band on the Run, All Things Must Pass - but a lot of it is mediocre and some of it is downright rubbish. On the podcast below, I set out the five worst examples, spread across all four members of the Beatles’ solo careers. The five songs that most besmirch the legacy of the Fab Four.
Then, I talk a little further about my friend, Lee Kazimir, by diving into our discussions around the solo works of the former members of the Beatles (it was one of our major topics of conversation). Yes, it’s another reading, taking from where we left off in “The Secret Lives of Straight Men” in the last podcast (if you are confused, go back to that and have a hear). There is a lot of Beatles solo material discussed here, so the crossover isn’t totally random.
I close by bringing this all back to Brexit. Why? It’s what you’re all here for, really, and I have to give the audience what they want. Just like the solo Beatles should have, more than they did in the end. I do actually think I’ve come up with something at least somewhat clever here, so probably more proud of myself than I should be.
Okay, but what are the five worst Beatles solo songs - and how the hell does that relate back to Brexit in any way? I promise, I really do cover all of it in the podcast, so have a listen. The video is in three parts and the last one is the one that covers Brexit - although, I keep coming back to Brexit, even when I’m talking about Beatles solo songs, so it weaves through the whole thing:
Nick, please go back to writing, or find a topic you have something to say about. I loved your Brexit blog... clear, concise and still entertaining, you gave the rest of us the means to cope with the madness that was Brexit.
I have made myself sit through a few of these podcasts and have found nothing but mindless waffle surrounding 2-3 minutes of actual content. Maybe it's not the right medium, maybe you lack the passion for your topic, but this is painful to listen to, esp. since it comes from the man who gave us one of the best Brexit blogs there was.
I love the Beatles, I was interested in your views and analogy with Brexit but please (as a paying subscriber) could you put a summary in your email? At the risk of sounding like a grumpy old woman, I don't have the time in my life to listen to yet another podcast but I am happy to pay to read your commentary.
